[VIDEO] 3 things happened when Onyeka Onwenu visited Badagry prison…. “It is shameful to find under-aged children locked up in prison custody, we must not be silent about this”

The elegant and sonorous music legend, Onyeka Onwenu, decided to visit the Badagry Prison in Lagos on an outreach to hundreds of children incarcerated in the adult prison. The outreach took place on Wednesday, 11th October 2017.

This visit was inspired by a touching story authored by Ayomide Odekanyan, that went viral online. Ayomide Odekanyan decried the shameful detention of underaged children while painting a gory scenario of the severity of the disease and deprivation being suffered by the imprisoned children. The music legend got motivated to intervene by doing everything possible to bring succour and attention to the plights of the children.

 

Three notable events which occured during Onyeka Onwenu’s visit include:

  1. Healthcare service by the medical team from the Healthy Pink Initiative Services (took care of the sick prisoners). Onyeka Onwenu

  2. Ms Owenu interacted with the inmates, narrating her own story of being a paternal orphan since age four. Onyeka OnwenuHer visit stirred a lot of emotional outburst amongst the inmates who were grateful with tears of joy.

  3. There was donation of 240 mattresses, biscuits, medical supplies and drugs, among other things, to the inmates of the Badagry Prison.Onyeka Onwenu

Delegates who joined in the visit include members of the Christown Platform, a Christian Whatsapp Group founded by the music legend, members of Prison Outreach Department of the Fountain of Life Church, two of her friends, Mrs. Chinelo Egbuna and Mrs. Violet Obiora, a team of doctors from an NGO, Healthy Pink Initiative Services, and two officers of Ztalion, an NGO.

  • Nigeria should out live the primitive ways and embrace modern ways of handling issues.
    Our prisons are highly polluted and can cause outbreak of disease mostly especially now that monkeypox is on the rave.
    Please government do something to alleviate the suffering of inmates.
