The elegant and sonorous music legend, Onyeka Onwenu, decided to visit the Badagry Prison in Lagos on an outreach to hundreds of children incarcerated in the adult prison. The outreach took place on Wednesday, 11th October 2017.
This visit was inspired by a touching story authored by Ayomide Odekanyan, that went viral online. Ayomide Odekanyan decried the shameful detention of underaged children while painting a gory scenario of the severity of the disease and deprivation being suffered by the imprisoned children. The music legend got motivated to intervene by doing everything possible to bring succour and attention to the plights of the children.
Three notable events which occured during Onyeka Onwenu’s visit include:
Healthcare service by the medical team from the Healthy Pink Initiative Services (took care of the sick prisoners).
Ms Owenu interacted with the inmates, narrating her own story of being a paternal orphan since age four. Her visit stirred a lot of emotional outburst amongst the inmates who were grateful with tears of joy.
There was donation of 240 mattresses, biscuits, medical supplies and drugs, among other things, to the inmates of the Badagry Prison.
